Goodwill Week 2007

You hear "Goodwill" and you think, "Time to clean out the closet." Please do:
thousands of people across the United States and Canada, including right here in Las Vegas, are struggling to find and keep good jobs. Goodwill is there to help them. We do that by selling your donations of clothing and household goods in Goodwill stores and using the proceeds to fund our job training programs.

Thanks to your support, last year alone, about 950,000 people benefited from Goodwill's career programs, including 2,809 in Las Vegas. Thanks to you, Goodwill places someone in a job every 57 seconds of every business day. People like Tim Dowen. Tim had a steady work history, working as a retail supervisor for almost five years and working as a customer service rep for a telephone company for four years, but in 2005 he was involved in a motor vehicle accident that left him paralyzed and wheelchair bound. He had to quit his two jobs and have extensive rehabilitation, still attending physical therapy three times a week. In the fall of 2006 Tim enrolled with BVR and he was referred to Goodwill's Office Training assessment. Tim was able to show Goodwill that he had great customer service skills and he had what it takes to be employed. Tim was referred to Goodwill's Job Placement Services and in January of 2007 Tim was offered a job at the Mirage as a part time Room Reservation Specialist. Through Tim's hard work and determination, he is on the road to success once again.

As we celebrate Goodwill Industries Week this May 6 to 12, we want to say thank you to the thousands of people in our Las Vegas Community who clean out their closets for the benefit of Goodwill. Thank you to the businesses in our community who hire Goodwill graduates and allow us to be at their work sites collecting donations. And thank you to our team members and volunteers who dedicate themselves to helping people earn a paycheck and support them and their families.
